Joining the Committee

I am a consultant involved in research and would be interested in joining the committee. What do I do?

The committee is constantly looking for consultant members. You can become a full expert member, a deputy member or a co-opted member, depending on your time availability. Full expert members attend every meeting, as much as possible, and are key to the effective running of the committee. Deputy members attend when a full member is unable to attend. A co-opted member attends when required. For example, if the committee is reviewing a clinical drugs trial, it will generally co-opt an expert in the field to provide an expert review of the trial to the committee. A co-opted member often attends just one meeting and stays for the discussion on the trial they are reviewing only. Alternatively, a co-opted member may attend for the full duration of a particular meeting. If you are a consultant, and interested in joining the committee, contact the administrator. She will ask you to e-mail her a copy of your cv, which will need to be forwarded to the Department of Health and Children.

Do you have to be a consultant to join the committee?

No. The Committee is multidisciplinary and welcomes healthcare professionals from all backgrounds. The committee is currently seeking a biostatistician and a General Practitioner to join the committee.

Are there lay members on the Committee?

Yes. From all walks of life. Lay members are essential to the effective running of the committee. The committee is currently seeking a lay member.

I have never been an ethics committee member before. Is there any training?

Yes. The Committee engages the Centre for Professional Ethics at Keele University every year to faciliate a one day training course for all committee members. In this regard, therefore members of Beaumont Hospital Ethics (Medical Research) Committee attend the equivalent training course to members of NHS Research Ethics Committees in the United Kingdom. The Committee has availed of all three days of Keele's initial training course over a three year period, via full day training days held in 2006, 2007 and 2008. This cycle of training was repeated in 2009, 2010 and 2011.
